Giuseppe Verdi benutzt mehrfach wiederkehrende Motive, am meisten in den Opern Rigoletto, Aida und Otello. Die Benutzung eines Erinnerungsmotivs kann einen dramatischen Focuspunkt im Werk anzeigen oder als Identifikations-Motiv fungieren, das f?r die Charakterisierung einer Person gebraucht wird. Gelegentlich wird au?erdem die gleiche harmonische Wendung verwendet. Der Begriff des Leitmotivs wird im Zusammenhang mit Giuseppe Verdi vom Verfasser bewusst vermieden, da der Begriff in der heutigen Zeit eindeutig mit Richard Wagner in Verbindung gebracht wird. Bei Wagner ist wiederum die Technik wiederkehrender Motive eine ganz andere und wesentlich umfangreichere. In seinem Opernwerk treten innerhalb einer Oper deutlich mehr Motive auf als bei Verdi, au?erdem werden diese Motive bei Wagner in h?herer Anzahl wiederholt. Bei Verdi ist es meist nur eine Melodie, die sich wenige Male in der Oper wiederholt. So z.
